The novel was adapted as a feature film of the same name, released in 1967 and starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Alec Guinness, Peter Ustinov, James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Paul Ford and Lillian Gish. ![]() The setting for much of the novel, the Hotel Trianon, was inspired by the Hotel Oloffson in central Port-au-Prince. ![]() Complications include Brown’s friendship with a rebel leader, politically charged hotel guests, the manipulations of a British arms dealer, and an affair with Martha Pineda, the wife of a South American ambassador. Brown, Smith, and Jones, their names suggesting a curious facelessness, are the “comedians” of Greene’s title. Jones, a confidence man, meet on a ship bound for Haiti. The story begins as three men, Brown, Smith, an “innocent” American, and Major H. Set in Haiti under the rule of François “Papa Doc” Duvalier and his secret police, the Tonton Macoute, the novel explores the political suppression and terrorism through the figure of an English hotel owner, Brown. ![]() The Comedians (1966) is a novel by Graham Greene. ![]()

Machiavelli’s ideal virtues are not necessarily those of benevolence and kindness, but of bravery, pride, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to continue state unity. Throughout The Prince, Machiavelli uses the term “virtue” to describe the traits that were necessary for the security of the state. This idea was contentious then and now - many people believe that rulers should act with kindness and lawfulness above all, rather than bending ethics to achieve the ends they want. Basically, the ends justify the means, even if the means are killing innocent people, blackmailing, and being deceitful. ![]() In The Prince, it is asserted that a good ruler is one who works for the benefit of the state at all times, even when this requires acting immorally or unethically. As you can guess from the title of the audiobook, most of Machiavelli’s phrasing revolves around princedoms, or monarchies ruled by a prince, but he writes that the principles can be applied to any sort of organized political power. By “the state”, he means any organization of power. Because Machiavelli lived in such tumultuous times, he placed a lot of value on acting to unite the state. ![]() ![]() While Machiavelli worked and played an active role in shifting the ruling powers in Europe, he developed a political philosophy based on the belief that the unity of the state is above all else. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Hd carlton books![]() ![]() I won’t get into the plot or anything that much since #1 it’s a trigger in itself and #2 there’s a lot to unpack anyway and i’m trying to keep this short and sweet. ![]() i grew so attached to them and wanted nothing but the best for them.
